Food Photography in London for Restaurant Websites and Social Media

Food Photography in London for Restaurant Websites and Social Media

Food photography is often associated with menus and food delivery apps, but restaurant images have many other uses.

A restaurant might need photographs for its website, social media, printed menus or promotional material. Each has a different purpose, but the images should still feel as though they belong to the same business.

When I photograph food for restaurants, the aim is not simply to make a dish look good in one photograph. It is to create a collection of images that represents the food and the restaurant, while giving the business content it can use across different channels.

Food Photography Has More Than One Purpose

A restaurant's photographs are often the first introduction a customer has to its food.

Someone visiting the website may want to understand the style of the restaurant. A person looking at Instagram might be interested in a particular dish, while someone browsing a menu needs a clear idea of what is being offered.

Photography helps communicate these things before a customer has even visited the restaurant.

This does not mean every image needs to be different. A well-planned food photography session can produce a collection of photographs that work together, while allowing individual dishes and details to stand out.

Food Photography for Restaurant Websites

A restaurant website needs to do more than list dishes and prices. It should give visitors a clear idea of the food, the atmosphere and the kind of experience they can expect.

Food photography can support this by showing dishes clearly, with attention to their presentation, colour and texture.

The images also need to fit the design of the website. A wide photograph may work well across a page, while a closer image can be more suitable for a particular dish or section.

Thinking about the final use of each photograph before the shoot helps avoid ending up with a collection of images that look good individually but are difficult to use together.

Food Photography for Social Media

Social media has different requirements from a restaurant website.

Images may appear in a feed, a Story or a promotional post. They need to work at different sizes and crops, with the important parts of the photograph remaining clear when viewed on a phone.

Consistency Matters

A restaurant does not need every photograph to look identical. Different dishes have different colours, textures and shapes.

However, there should be a sense of consistency across the collection. Lighting, colour, backgrounds and composition can help the images feel connected to the same restaurant.

This is particularly useful when a business wants to build a recognisable visual style over time.

A Restaurant Photoshoot Is About More Than the Food

For No.3 Restaurant & Bar at Novotel London Paddington, the brief was to create a collection of photographs for Instagram that showed more than individual dishes.

Alongside food and drinks, I photographed the chefs at work, food preparation, table settings, the dining area and the team. These images gave the restaurant a wider collection of content to use across its social media, showing both what it serves and the experience of dining there.

This is how I approach restaurant photography: the photographs should work together to communicate the character of the business, rather than simply showing a series of dishes.

The Food Should Still Look Like the Food

For me, one of the most important parts of food photography is authenticity.

The photograph should show the dish as it is intended to be served. The ingredients, portion, texture and presentation all matter because they are part of what the customer is choosing.

Styling and lighting can help communicate these details, but they should not turn the dish into something it is not.

I prefer to work with the real food and find the best way to photograph it. The result should be attractive, but it should also feel believable.

This approach is useful whether the photographs are intended for a restaurant website, social media or printed material.

Creating a Useful Collection of Restaurant Photographs

When planning a restaurant photoshoot, it is worth considering the images as a collection rather than treating every photograph as a separate job.

Some images may focus on individual dishes. Others might show several dishes together, the preparation process, the team or details that help communicate the restaurant's style.

The important point is to have a clear purpose for the photographs.

A collection planned around the restaurant's actual needs is more useful than a set of images created without considering where they will appear. It also helps keep the visual communication consistent when the photographs are used across different channels.

Restaurant Food Photography in London

London has a wide range of restaurants, from independent cafés and neighbourhood restaurants to established dining businesses.

Each has its own food, atmosphere and way of presenting itself. The photography should reflect those differences rather than applying the same look to every restaurant.

When I photograph food, I pay attention to the dish, the light, the composition and the way the final image will be used. These details help create photographs that work for the business without losing the character of the food itself.
